Job Description:

Under the direction of the Assistant Athletic Director for SDA Nutrition, provides preventive and therapeutic nutrition counseling and education for student-athletes. Ensures compliance with the rules and regulations of NCAA and Big-12, as well as the policies and procedures of the University and the Arizona Board of Regents in all projects.

Salary: $60,000

Essential Duties:

• Serve as the point of SDA Nutrition department contact for 3-4 primary assigned teams. Assists with coverage of other teams and student-athlete groups.

• Assure nutrition department protocols for medical and performance nutrition needs are implemented department-wide, including nutrient deficiency, injury and surgery, body composition, and other protocols.

• Participates as a lead member of the Eating Disorders Team at ASU, including direct student-athlete care and clinical care team communication regarding eating disorders and disordered eating, and relative energy deficiency in sport.

• Establish proper medical and performance nutrition focused plans for student-athletes in accordance with their health and performance needs, including training, competition, recovery, hydration, travel, nutrient deficiency, bone health, digestive health, and more.

• Work with multidisciplinary teams (Physician, ATC, Strength and Conditioning, Sport Coaches, Sports Psychologist, etc.) to implement nutritional options to improve the nutritional status of student-athletes.

• Documents and communicates medical nutrition therapy and essential student-athlete health information in the electronic medical record keeping systems, following appropriate documentation standards and protocols.

• Performs and interprets body composition assessments.

• Calculates student-athlete nutritional requirements.

• Analyzes nutritional content of food.

• Reviews dietary supplements for safety, efficacy, and athletic banned substances.

• Educates student-athletes on the risks of athletic banned substances and highlights the critical importance of using third-party tested supplements to maintain safety and comply with NCAA and SDA regulations.

• Assists with menu planning and operation of department-provided meals.

• Educates other healthcare professionals about food and nutrition.

• Develops and implements evidence-based sports nutrition education plans for teams.

• Conduct team talks providing visual and verbal education, including but not limited to grocery store tours, cooking demonstrations, educational handouts, digital media, and presentations.

• Assist in the management of centralized nutrition areas such as fueling stations and nutrition bar spaces.

• Remains up to date on current research and best practices in sports nutrition.

• Provide expert explanations for food and nutrition issues.

• Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Earned a bachelor's degree with course work approved by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND).

• Coursework typically includes food and nutrition sciences, foodservice systems management, business, economics, computer science, sociology, biochemistry, physiology, microbiology and chemistry.

• Completed an accredited, supervised practice program at a health-care facility, community agency or foodservice corporation.

• Passed a national examination administered by the Commission on Dietetic Registration.

• Completes continuing professional educational requirements to maintain registration.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

• Knowledge of the principles and practices of nutrition care, clinical dietetics and nutrition education.

• Knowledge of anatomy and physiology.

• Skill in effective and individual communications.

• Skill in effective group communications.

• Ability to assess individual needs of students, faculty and staff in weight management, disease-specific issues and nutrition.

• Ability to develop specific dietary programs and make recommendations for individual students, faculty and staff to improve wellness and performance.

• Ability to work with multidisciplinary teams of staff from other departments to develop individual nutritional programs for students, faculty and staff.

• Ability to stimulate changes in individual, institutional, and corporate behaviors to create a more sustainable environment

• Ability to lead by example in communicating, participating and encouraging support of the institution’s sustainability programs

• Knowledge of HIPAA guidelines related to the communication of student-athlete health status in the context of sport participation.

Desired Qualifications:

• Master’s Degree in nutrition, dietetics, exercise science, or other related field preferred.

• Board Certified Specialist in Sports Dietetics (CSSD) preferred.

• Demonstrated experience providing nutrition care for eating disorders and disordered eating, and relative energy deficiency in sport.

• Demonstrated experience providing nutrition care for clinical needs such as nutrient deficiencies, injury and surgery, allergies, bone health, digestive health.

• Evidence of supplement screening experience. 

• Experience conducting hydration testing to assess, plan, and develop individualized hydration strategies for student-athletes.

• At least one year of related experience in a sports nutrition setting.

• Experience in assessing athletes’ performance nutrition and medical nutrition needs.

• Demonstrated experience in developing specific nutritional programs and recommendations for athletes to improve wellness and performance.

• Demonstrated experience working with multidisciplinary teams of staff from other departments to develop individual and team nutritional programs.

• Experience with TeamWorks athlete management systems.

• Experience with electronic medical record keeping systems.

• Evidence of excellent interpersonal communication skills.

Working Environment:

• Activities are performed in an environmentally controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting, keyboarding and manipulating a computer mouse (75%); required to stand for varying lengths of time and walk moderate distances to perform work (10%)

• Frequent bending, reaching, lifting, pushing and pulling up to 25 pounds (15%)

• Regular activities require ability to quickly change priorities, which may include and/or are subject to resolution of conflicts

• Ability to clearly communicate verbally, read, write, see and hear to perform essential functions

• Regular use of standard office equipment including, but not limited to:  computer workstation/laptop (keyboard, monitor, mouse), printer, fax, calculator, copier, telephone and associated computer/technology peripherals
