Job Summary
The Audio/Visual (AV) Engineer will work as a member of Fighting Illini Productions (Live Video) unit within the Division of Intercollegiate Athletics, providing general IT support for game day and special events, ensuring seamless functionality of equipment. This position will also provide support for Fighting Illini Productions, B1G+ and In-Venue Experience productions, as well as maintaining and servicing all broadcast equipment, LED/scoreboard hardware and interface, and audio systems for event presentation at Illinois athletic venues.

Duties and Responsibilities
Live Event Production
- Directs activities for management for Football game day broadcasting systems, ensuring functionality of broadcast systems and LED scoreboard
- Directs activities for management for Basketball game day broadcasting systems, ensuring functionality of broadcast systems and LED scoreboard
- Directs activities for management for Olympic Sports game day broadcasting systems, ensuring functionality of broadcast systems and LED scoreboard
- Premium Event support engineer
- LED/Scoreboard display maintenance and repair
- Audio systems maintenance and repair
- Primary consultant, technician and troubleshooter for DIA audio video technology including but not limited to scoreboards, sport-specific performance and analytical systems, digital signage, televisions, sound systems, projectors, cameras, and related accessories.
- Coordinate and facilitate appropriate training and education of audio and video technology for end users and content managers.
- Responsible for monitoring constant changes and staying abreast of the newest technologies invests in new systems, techniques, and equipment.
- Minimize loss of service due to equipment failures with LED/Scoreboard and audio systems.
- Serve as Big Ten Plus broadcast technical support.
- Serve as technical and administrative resource
- Ensures compliance with broadcast, Big Ten Conference and university regulations and guidelines
- Provide general IT support during athletics and special events, including wired and wireless Internet access, in-game live statistics feeds, external media networking support, instant replay hardware, security camera systems, stats scoreboard interface, and select technical systems.
- Coordinate game day/event IT support covering audio/visual systems, internet access, concessionaire networking, and support for internal and external groups.
- Participate in game day management meetings and act as the point of contact for instant replay infrastructure.
- Schedule, train, and direct hourly workers.
- Create processes and documentation to provide continuity and standardization of support.
- Rotate on-call availability with other team members for events as required.
Audio/Visual System Integration and Maintenance
- Assist in designing, developing, and implementing AV systems for future venues with integration into broadcast centers.
- Oversee and maintain equipment inventory, including computer equipment, software, and hardware throughout video production facilities.
- Deploy software updates and security patches to audio/visual systems.
- Perform preventive maintenance and troubleshooting on AV equipment, LED/scoreboard displays, and audio systems located in athletics offices, venues, and broadcast control rooms.
- Manage workstation policy deployment and hardware inventory for AV systems.
- Assist in the strategic planning of AV systems integration, installation, purchasing and allocation.
Schedule, Train, and Direct Hourly Workers
- Develop and maintain weekly and monthly work schedules.
- Monitor attendance, punctuality, and time-off requests, adjusting schedules accordingly to ensure seamless business operations.
- Coordinate, schedule and train game day/event IT support covering audio/visual systems, internet access, concessionaire networking, and support for internal and external groups.
- Coordinate and lead the recruitment, onboarding, and training process for all new hourly employees.
- Deliver job-specific training that includes customer service expectations, equipment usage, safety protocols, and standard operating procedures; provide ongoing coaching and refresher training as needed.
- Supervise daily activities of hourly employees, providing clear instructions and expectations to promote accountability and maintain performance standards.
- Conduct regular team meetings and one-on-one check-ins to provide feedback, resolve conflicts, and address concerns in a timely and professional manner.
- Serve as the main point of contact for hourly staff, facilitating open communication and supporting employee engagement and morale.
Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent.
Any one or combination totaling three (3) years (36 months) from the categories below:
- course work in broadcast engineering or a closely related field, as measured by the following conversion table or its proportional equivalent:
- 30 semester hours equals one (1) year (12 months)
- Associate’s Degree (60 semester hours) equals eighteen months (18 months)
- 90 semester hours equals two (2) years (24 months)
- Bachelor’s degree (120 semester hours) equals three (3) years (36 months)
- work experience as a broadcasting engineer or closely related experience.
- course work in broadcast engineering or a closely related field, as measured by the following conversion table or its proportional equivalent:

Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with installation, maintenance, or operation of technical broadcast control rooms or trucks, video board maintenance or operation
- Two years of experience with Daktronics display installation, maintenance and training
- Experience with video switchers, graphics platforms, LED displays, broadcast cameras, fiber, coax, and audio cable termination.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Signal Flow and Routing – Understanding of analog/digital audio and video signal paths, SDI, HDMI, IP-based transmission (e.g., Dante, NDI).
- IT Systems and OS Proficiency – Familiarity with Windows, macOS, Linux for deployment and support in AV work flows.
- Equipment Maintenance and Installation – Proper cabling, racking, mounting, power distribution, and preventative maintenance protocols.
- Manage and Maintain Servers related to AV playback, recording, and automation (e.g., signage, broadcast playback, storage).
- LED Display Technology – Understanding of pixel pitch, refresh rate, brightness, contrast, and color calibration for LED walls and video boards.
- LED Panel Maintenance – Familiarity with module replacement, cabinet alignment, internal diagnostics, and power/data signal flow.
- Diagnose and Repair LED Video boards at the component and system level, including identifying dead pixels, signal failure, or controller issues.
- Calibrate LED Walls for uniform brightness and color accuracy using software and hardware tools.
- Function in accordance with all NCAA, Big Ten and University rules and regulations.
- Demonstrate the ability to meet short deadlines, have excellent verbal and written communication skills, and work in a team-oriented and fast-paced environment.

Appointment Information
This is a 100% full-time Civil Service 1319 - Chief Broadcasting Engineer position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after 8/18/2025. The salary range is $77,000 - $80,000 commensurate with experience.
