General Description/Primary Purpose

To supervise and provide athletic training and health care services at Lenoir-Rhyne University.

Description of Duties and Tasks

• Administer athletic training health care to intercollegiate athletes at all practices, competitions and events. Primary sport responsibilities are assigned by the head athletic trainer. Travel is required.
• Assist in supervision of daily operation of the athletic training room.
• Supervise and evaluate athletic training students in the coverage of sport assignments and with clinical proficiencies.
• Administer athletic training health care and emergency care to all students, faculty, staff and campus visitors.
• Maintain athletic injury reports and medical records.
• Assist with the development and implementation of athletic training program policies and procedures.
• Maintain inventory of supplies and equipment.

• Assist in the housekeeping and cleanliness of the athletic training Room.
• Other duties as assigned.

Physical Requirements

The athletic trainer position includes the following physical demands and abilities:

• Assist with lifting and transportation of injured athletes from the field of competition.
• Maintain awareness of athletic fields and surroundings to safety hazards, and communicate those hazards to appropriate staff members.
• Stand and walk for periods of up to 2 to 3 hours in order to supervise practices and competitions.
• Run and sprint to the aid of an athlete in the event of emergency injuries.
• Explain and demonstrate therapeutic exercises to students and athletes using a variety of movements of the upper and lower extremities.
• Provide manual resistance to specific muscle and joint movements to evaluate and rehabilitate athletic injuries.
• Carry and lift 10-gallon water coolers daily.
• Repetitive wrist and hand movements by applying strapping and bandaging techniques daily.
• Writing and typing injury and medical records in individual athlete’s files daily.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

• Certification by the National Athletic Trainer’s Association Board of Certification.
• Licensed, or eligible for state licensure, by the North Carolina Board of Athletic Training Examiners.
• Minimum of a master’s degree in an area related to athletic health care, physical education or human performance.
