Duties and Responsibilities :

• * Under the medical supervision of the Athletic Team Physician and administrative supervision of the Associate Athletics Director for Internal Operations, coordinates and manages the development and implementation of the Student-Athlete Mental Health and Wellness Program.  
• * Oversees all administrative aspects of the program, including but not limited to establishing proper documentation, procedures, office policies for intake, service provision and referral.
• * Develops and maintains Emergency Action Plans and crisis plans related to mental health care.
• *Configures and maintains the technology and electronic infrastructures needed to support service provision (e.g. HIPAA compliance electronic charting and recording-keeping systems, telehealth platforms, etc.). 
• * Independently conducts psychosocial assessments and provides psychosocial treatment of student-athletes, including but not limited to treatment of emotional/behavior problems, educational/academic problems, attention problems, organic disorders, eating disorders, social and interpersonal dysfunction, physical/sexual/emotional abuse and neglect, personality dysfunction and drug/alcohol abuse. 
• * Maintains accurate and current notes as part of patient mental health records, for all patients seen. 
• *Provides proactive mental health counseling and guidance for teams and individual student-athletes, as well as provision of mental health counseling / therapy.
• * Assists student-athletes across all mental health disciplines, including rehabilitation from injury, coping with stress, anxiety, and depression, transitioning into and out of collegiate athletics, and dealing with common mental health conditions, as well as working with common sports psychology concerns such as performance anxiety.
• * Functions as a member of the departmental team.  Responsible for triaging referrals and collaborating on cases with other members of the healthcare delivery team. Serves as the point of contact for the UHM Athletics Mental Health team.
• * Performs clinical and performance-based training to student-athletes, coaches and Athletic Department staff as needed. 
• * Promotes and maintains an environment where the physical, mental, social and academic well-being of all student-athletes are a priority. 
• * Supervises and manages Mental Health Intern / Pre-Licensee casual hires.
• * Maintains collaborative working relationships with administrators and coaches in the department, other college offices, and appropriate relationships with individuals interested in the Athletics Department.
• * Performs the duties of a Campus Security Authority as defined by University policy and federal law with regards to the Clery Act.
• * Maintains confidentiality to include but not limited to information, files and records that the incumbent may obtain or possess, in accordance with HIPAA, FERPA, professional ethical standards, federal and state laws and University of Hawaii policies.
• * Complies with the laws, policies, rules, and regulations governing the University of Hawaii and its employees, and the rules of the NCAA and affiliated conferences as now constituted or as may be amended in the future.    Immediately advises the Director of Athletics or designee if you have reasonable cause to believe violations, whether by employees, students, or others have occurred or will occur.

  Minimum Qualifications

• Possession of a Master degree in Mental Health Counseling or related field and five (5) years of progressive responsibilities in mental health counseling/therapy; or equivalent combination of education and/or professional work experience which provides the required education, knowledge, skills and abilities as indicated.  

• Considerable working knowledge of principles, practices and techniques in the area of mental health/wellness prevention/education and/or service provision as demonstrated by the broad knowledge of the full range of pertinent standard and evolving concepts, principles and methodologies.

• Considerable working knowledge and understanding of applicable federal and state laws, rules, regulations and theories and systems associated with mental health/wellness prevention/education and/or service provision.

• Demonstrated ability to resolve wide ranging complex problems through the use of creative reasoning and logic to accurately determine the cause of the problems and the resolution of the problems in an effective, innovative and timely manner.

• Demonstrated ability to interpret and present information and ideas clearly and accurately in writing, verbally and by preparation of reports and other materials.

• Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external organizations, groups, team leaders and members, and individuals.

• Demonstrated ability to operate a personal computer and word processing software and spreadsheet software. 

• For supervisory work, demonstrated ability to lead subordinates, manage work priorities and projects, and manage employee relations.

• Minimum of two (2) years of experience working as a fully licensed therapist.

• Holds and maintains an unrestricted license to practice as a mental health professional in the State of Hawaii.

• Demonstrated ability to pay attention to details and strong organizational skills.

• Must be able to work a flexible schedule depending on programmatic needs.

• Understanding of, and compliance with, privacy standards including HIPAA and FERPA. Desirable Qualifications: 

• Knowledge and functional understanding of the unique stressors and experiences faced by Division 1 Athletes. 

• Experience in brief behavioral interventions.

• Experience working with collegiate student-athletes.

• Experience working with and treating eating disorders.

• CMPC (Certified Mental Performance Consultant) Certification 

• At least 3 years of experience in developing and/or managing a mental health program or service.

• Experience working in an educational setting.

• Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate, educate and interact with staff, coaches, administrators, and student-athletes.
