Preferred Qualifications:

Doctorate in Counseling or Clinical Psychology or similar field.

Candidate will possess three to five years of experience in sports related psychological or social work practice.

Experience in consulting with coaches, athletic trainers, strength and conditioning staff, and team physicians, and providing outreach to student athletes and athletic department staff members.

Experience with return to sport from injury, navigating barriers to academic and performance success, eating concerns, and mental skills training for performance (e.g., visualization, mindfulness, confidence building)

Experience with team building interventions and group facilitation.

General responsibilities:

This position is embedded within the University of Houston Department of Athletics Department and will have responsibility in focusing on outreach, prevention intervention, case management, wellness education, support groups to meet/exceed the need of student-athletes at the collegiate level.

The Embedded Counselor (EC) will have a split schedule in which eighty (80) percent of their time will be serving Athletics student-athletes, and twenty (20) percent at Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) serving undergraduate and graduate students, staff, and faculty.

The EC’s primary responsibilities will include the development of this newly established position while offering a multifaceted ethical, appropriate developmental, and holistic approach to mental health care that is individualized to demonstrated need. Further responsibilities will include outreach, the application of sports psychology methods and interventions, along with wellness care to develop personal, academic, athletic, and life skills while demonstrating strong detail and understanding of the unique needs of student-athletes, including a strong attention and motivation to an openness in working with a wide range of diverse clients, and the pursuit of continued education.

The EC will establish and maintain service presence within Athletics, including networking and marketing service availability, assessing, and addressing stigma and barriers to seeking services, and, when appropriate, collaborating with administration and staff to meet clinical and programmatic needs of the student-athletes.

Overall, the EC will provide multidisciplinary and multiculturally competent individual, couples, and group services within a short-term therapy framework; facilitate mental health workshops; adhere to stepped care principles in assessing the student-athletes fit for services; perform crisis intervention and assessment and engage in consultation and outreach.

Job Description: 

Provides complex mental health services to the campus community, including individual, couples and group counseling and therapy; crisis intervention; and, supervision and training of doctoral interns and graduate students in counseling and clinical psychology. Provides leadership in consultation and outreach services and psychological assessments.

1. Provides individual, couples and group counseling to students, staff and faculty.
2. Responsible for outreach/consultation services to the campus community, and serves as a guide to lower level counselors.
3. Provides intake and on-call services to clients with personal, vocational and academic concerns.
4. Performs psychological/psycho-educational assessments and recommends suitable services.
5. Maintains appropriate case documentation, supervision and evaluation records.
6. Serves on university committees and participates in university programs as requested by supervisor.
7. Conducts training/assessment seminars; provides orientation; teaches classes.
8. Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

The University of Houston Department of Athletics is located in the City of Houston’s third ward, has strong athletic programs and is a member of the Big 12 Conference. Houston aims to support Houston student-athletes in their primary goal of earning a college degree while also assisting them to prepare for life after college. The Academic Center for Excellence offers a comprehensive program with full and part-time staff to assist over 450 University of Houston student-athletes in 17 sports and is located in the Athletics/Alumni Center. Doctoral and 1 year experience

Doctorate in Counseling Psychology, Clinical Psychology, or other degree acceptable to the Texas State Board of Examiners of Psychologists (TSBEP)Completed one year full-time supervised internship in APA-Accredited college or university counseling center or other relevant setting or one year postdoctoral. Eligible to become a licensed psychologist in the State of Texas or newly licensed (1-3 years).Requires a minimum of one (1) year of directly job-related experience.

 

Salary: 4,463.00 - 5,804.50
