Northern Illinois University (NIU) is accepting applications for the position of Assistant Coach Women’s Track & Field/Cross Country. This is a full-time, 12-month position with benefits. Under the general supervision of the Head Coach/Director of Women’s Track & Field, this position will assist head coach in coaching student-athletes, implementation and instruction of game strategy, recruiting prospective student-athletes, monitoring student-athlete academic progress, program organization, managing travel, managing student-athlete scholarships and overseeing the discipline, conduct and image of the sport program and student-athletes of a major university sport program in conjunction with other departmental responsibilities as assigned.

Assist head coach in the management and administration of all phases of Track & Field/Cross Country programs, athletes and staff.

This is a professional coaching position, and all of the duties of the position must be conducted in adherence with the policies, rules and regulations of affiliated national, regional and state intercollegiate athletic associations, the Mid-American conference (or subsequent member conference) and the university. | | Essential Duties and Responsibilities |
Coaching – 40%

• Responsible for the ongoing teaching and instruction of student-athletes in the performance of their sport such as, but not limited to, competitions, practices, individual and team workouts, and conditioning sessions.
• Assists the Head Coach/Director of Track and Field and Head Coach Cross Country with instructing athletes in the rules, regulations, equipment, and techniques of the sport.

Team Related Activities – 15%

• Assist head coach(es) in the preparing for and conducting of all team-related activities including skill instruction, sport strategy and competitive opportunities.
• Coach and instruct student-athletes individually and in groups and demonstrate event techniques and skills required to be successful at Track and Field and Cross Country.
• Plan and attend coaching and practice sessions, competitions, tournaments, etc. in accordance with NCAA and conference regulations for specified events.
• Develop, recommend and teach competition/event strategy.

Academic Support – 15%

• Provide an overall positive educational environment for our Student-Athletes conducive to learning, athletic development, social growth, and preparing them for life beyond college.
• Supervise, in conjunction with the athletic tutoring and advising program, the total academic progress of the team implementing corrective action plans through appropriate staff.

Administration – 10%

• Assist in the administration of the entire sport program, including, but not limited to daily practices, game planning and implementation, recruiting, equipment management, facilities scheduling, and budget.

Safety and Conduct – 10%

• Monitor and maintain the discipline and conduct of student-athletes to support the image and reputation of the department and university.
• Responsible for the development, safety and conduct of the student-athletes within specific sport program.

Public Relations – 5%

• Perform both direct and indirect public relations functions including promotion, fund raising, public speaking, community events, and through camps and/or clinics.
• Serve on departmental/campus committees as requested.

Departmental Needs – 5%

• Cash handling responsibilities — $5,000 – $10,000 annually.
• When practical under the circumstances, intercollegiate athletic staff is encouraged to voluntarily attend all athletic events to promote audience participation and support for NIU team efforts.

- Bachelor’s Degree. - Minimum three (3) years of Division I, II, III, NAIA, or Junior College experience in coaching competition and training strategies, plus teaching progressions for track and field and cross-country. - Minimum three (3) year’s experience in recruitment and retention of quality student-athletes, particularly at the regional level (Midwest) including knowledge of AAU and high school programs. - Experience coaching the Jumping events. | | Additional Requirements (SPS) |
